Camp Staff

Winona State assistant track and field coach Mike Turgeon is in his fifth season helping the throwers on the Warriors’ roster. In his five seasons Turgeon has developed a strong tradition of throwers Winona State has ever had compete.

Turgeon has instructed nine of the top 10 hammer and weight throwers in school history. His coaching has produced a NCAA Division II Indoor National Champion, Emily King, in the 20 pound weight throw. King won the weight throw with a toss of 60-feet, 9 1/2-inches. Turgeon has also coached King to a second place in the NCAA Division II Indoor National Championship. He coached King to a third and fourth place finish in the NCAA Division II Outdoor National Championships. With the instruction from Turgeon, King earned four All-American honors by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. In 2007-08 Turgeon coached another Warrior thrower to the National Championships with Rebecca Stier qualifying in the shot put.

Following the success of his throwers during the 2006-07 season, Turgeon was named the North Central Region Assistant Coach of the Year by the USTFCCCA. Turgeon’s throwers placed first in the 20-pound weight throw in the indoor national championship added to a fourth and 13th place finish in the hammer throw in the outdoor national championship. He coached several top ten finishes in the 20-pound weight throw, shot put, javelin, hammer throw, and discus in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Championships that season.

With his ability to coach and develop throwers, in 2008 Turgeon was selected to attend the Elite Coaching Camp at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, CA. Turgeon was selected from nominations from the United States of America Track and Field Development Event Coordinators. The idea behind the camp is to help educate coaches on how to develop athletes who will one day compete in the Olympics or World Championships.

In 2008 Turgeon coached a post-collegiate athlete to a fifth place finish at the USATF Indoor Championships in the weight throw and coached the same athlete to the USA Olympic Team Trials in the hammer throw.

Turgeon competed as a thrower at the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse where he was a two-time NCAA Division III National Champion in the discus. He was a six-time NCAA Division III All-American in the discus and the weight throw. Turgeon won four Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships and was a record holder in the discus.

Turgeon graduated from the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse with two degrees: a Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Physical Education and a Master of Science in Sport Administration.

Turgeon is the Director of Student-Athlete Services at Winona State University which helps student-athletes make the transition from high school to college and then college to the working world.

Turgeon lives in Onalaska, WI with his wife Abby and their son Drew.
